Why Flexibility Matters
In the last lesson, you learned that transferring points to airlines can unlock tremendous value. But here's the thing: you don't want to be locked into a single airline.
What if United doesn't have availability for your trip? What if you find a better deal through a different airline's program? This is where transferable points shine—they give you options.
The Major Programs
There are five major transferable points programs in the U.S.:
Chase Ultimate Rewards
Best for: Beginners and all-around flexibility
Key airline partners: United, Southwest, Hyatt, British Airways, Air France/KLM
Standout feature: Hyatt transfer is considered one of the best hotel values
Cards that earn: Sapphire Preferred, Sapphire Reserve, Freedom Flex, Ink Business
Amex Membership Rewards
Best for: Most transfer partners and premium travel
Key airline partners: Delta, British Airways, ANA, Singapore, Air France/KLM
Standout feature: Largest selection of transfer partners (20+)
Cards that earn: Gold Card, Platinum Card, Green Card, Blue Business Plus
Capital One Miles

Cards that earn: Venture X, Venture, Spark Miles
Citi ThankYou Points

Bilt Rewards

Standout feature: Only card that earns points on rent (no fee)
Cards that earn: Bilt Mastercard
Which Program Should You Start With?
For most beginners, we recommend starting with Chase Ultimate Rewards. Here's why:
- Easiest approval: Chase cards are more accessible than Amex premium cards
- Great partners: United, Southwest, and Hyatt cover most domestic needs
- Flexible backup: You can book through the Chase travel portal at 1.25-1.5¢ per point
- Strong card lineup: Freedom cards earn bonus categories; Sapphire cards provide transfer access
That said, the "best" program depends on your travel goals. Flying to Asia frequently? Amex's ANA and Singapore partnerships might be more valuable. Paying rent? Bilt is a no-brainer.
Analysis paralysis is real in this hobby. The truth is, any of these programs will serve you well. Start with one, learn the system, and expand later if needed.
Transfer Ratios
Most transfers happen at a 1:1 ratio (1 credit card point = 1 airline mile). But there are exceptions:
- Some hotel transfers are 1:2 or worse
- Occasional transfer bonuses offer 20-30% extra miles
- A few partners have 2:1 ratios (avoid these usually)
We'll cover transfer strategy in more detail in Level 3: Redeeming.
